Good morning and happy Wednesday! Well, it FINALLY happened. The IRS has officially released that much anticipated information – the first day to file your 2017 taxes.  And the magic date is…(drumroll, please)…Monday, January 29, 2018. This date is actually a few days later than last year’s January 19 beginning date.

Similar to last year, “Tax Day” doesn’t fall on the typical April 15th. We will get another couple of days tax receiptbefore the big day. April 15 falls on a Saturday, which would normally mean the filing deadline would be extended to the following Monday – which this year is April 17. However, Emancipation Day (which is considered a federal holiday in Washington DC) falls on Monday, April 17. So, that means we get another day! The official deadline to file your 2017 taxes is Tuesday, April 18. Make sure to have all your I’s dotted and your T’s crossed in regard to your taxes or file an extension by the 18th, if not, you can expect the IRS to show you some love in the form of penalties.

This is the time of year when all of your tax paperwork should be arriving (or already arrived). Employees and independent contractors can expect their W2s and 1099s later this month or the beginning of next. Some forms (like 1095s, 1098s, etc.) may have already arrived, but will likely be arriving later this month. Just be on the lookout for them! Start gathering your necessary paperwork so you are all ready to go and can beat the rush when it comes to filing your taxes. Not only will filing earlier help you to receive your refund quicker if you are due one, filing earlier actually decreases your risk of tax related identity fraud. Plus, if you file earlier, you can go ahead and check that dreaded “file taxes” line off of your to-do list and focus on more of the enjoyable things in life.
